About Us
“It’s the service that counts” – states Managing Director James Carrier of the long established tool distributor Cooks of Bedford when discussing the continuing success and appeal of the company.
Cooks of Bedford was established in 1948 when owner Ron Cook was selling tools from the back of a converted ambulance in East Anglia. The next major development was to purchase suitable premises in Bedford to store and sell tools and further expansion meant looking for even larger premises which took Cooks of Bedford to St Mary's Street. This is when Jim Carrier became involved with the company by purchasing the business from Ron.
In 1962 the business was forced to move due again and suitable premises were located, where a good retail area was available, together with new purpose built stores. Cooks remained in these premises for nearly 35 years, and are now located in 6,000 sq ft premises on the Woburn Road Industrial Estate under the management of James Carrier, Jim's son.
Even today after sixty years of growth James ensures the company continues to expand into new product ranges, supplying the changing needs of its customers. Work clothing is already an important area for the company and it has ongoing plans to develop the range even further developing its work clothing. The range includes 50 different styles of shoes, in all sizes and competitively priced.
Cook of Bedford has also been most fortunate that Draper Tools have been most generous in supplying a large quantity of display stands for the new trade counter, and most recently, have assisted with creating a large first floor power tool display area.
With shelves bulging with brands such as Hitachi, G&J Hall, Rhodius, Sealey, Harrison & Clough, Draper, Dickies, Tusker, Britool, Makita, Metabo, Ryobi and a score more, it is no wonder that the company is employing more staff all the time to meet demand.
We all demand a fast and accurate response to our requirements, with a positive and knowledgeable service. Loyal staff strive to provide the very best service with the care and consideration you would expect from a family run business. Cook’s offer a local delivery service to account customers and welcome old and new customers to visit the trade counter, enjoy a cup of coffee and spend time evaluating the vast ranges of hand, power and cutting tools.
1,500 account customers are an indication of the successful appeal of the Cook’s of Bedford approach. Guaranteed next day delivery free of charge within 30 miles of Bedford is another winning strategy.
There really can be no doubting that the formula for a successful tool retail business, created by Ron before being refined to perfection by Jim and James, is what Cook’s of Bedford has, its continued growth, along with an ever expanding customer base are the proof.
Likes so many independent tool retailers THS Tools Group has played an important role in helping Cook's grow and prosper. James is quick to point out, the team at THS has always given its fullest support – to read more about THS, click here.
